Wildcat Spotlight: Candace Carter

Wildcat Spotlight: Candace Carter

One of the newest additions to the Deep Run staff, Candace Carter, made her debut in the social studies department this year.

In high school, it was Carter’s theater teacher who first inspired her to teach. Since then, that desire has paved the way for Carter to become an educator. Choosing the subject of history was the easy part for her. With displays of maps around her classroom and bookshelves filled with books containing perspectives of people throughout different historical eras, it’s not hard to see why.

“I really just love it, it’s just so interesting to me,” Carter said.

Carter shows her passion for social studies through more than just her classroom décor.

“My AP Euro students will tell you that I stand up here, hands flailing,” Carter said.

Carter demonstrates her understanding of history in a thorough and effective way by teaching about people and events in layman terms which makes topics easier to comprehend, even for someone with limited knowledge of the subject.

Carter shows genuine interest in the comfort and education of the students she teaches. From new social norms to voices in opinion regarding past history, change is one of the many things that impact the subject. Carter thinks new changes to curriculum, like the addition of new African American courses, will positively impact students’ learning and growing experiences.

“I think it’s going to be super helpful for students to take it,” Carter said. “I believe that it will help students have conversations outside the school about similar topics and that it will help them understand the news better.”

Carter believes that the students of today are very “passion” oriented. She firmly believes that students will stick with the subject of social studies and that students’ love for history will only grow with time.

“The population that is going to college is not going to lose interest. The further on we go in time, the better our ability to document the things around us, and get a richer depiction of the history we leave behind,” Carter said.

Carter seems determined to teach with the times, understand the diversity of perspectives, and effectively educate students. With these abilities, everything is looking very good for her endeavors as a Wildcat.
