The six-time regional champions gymnastics team is getting ready for a stronger season ahead, and the team hopes for a state ring on their finger this year.
The team is setting its sights on winning the state championship and is more motivated than ever to make its goal a reality.
Among the team’s athletes is senior Maddie Perkins, who began her journey at just two years old. Specializing in bars, she has overcome injuries, particularly to her ankles. This has shifted her focus to perfecting her routines for that event.
“I specialize in bars because I hurt my ankles so much to the point where I have practiced bars the most out of all the events in recent years,” said Perkins.
She is motivated to keep going after her injuries and aim for the goal of the team.
“We want a ring! Let’s win states for the first time,” Perkins said.
The team began preparing in early November with tryouts. Despite rigorous training, the team maintains a positive, encouraging environment.
“We are a tight-knit group of girls who love what they do,” Perkins said.
Catie Burkett believes the unity in this team builds them up to new heights.
“We have grown with each other over the years and love bringing in our new girls,” senior Catie Burkett said.
Their camaraderie and support for one another are key factors that set Deep Run apart from other teams, as they support each other no matter the circumstances.
“We always build each other up and cheer each other on,” said Perkins.
They all share the same goal, which is to get that ring, a beacon of a state win. Both athletes agree that their most memorable moments include competing at the top of the region and meeting collegiate gymnasts, fueling their ambitions for the future.
This year, the team is working on new skills and routines, including release moves on bars, new dismounts on vault and beam, and leaps on the floor. Not only are their skills growing, but so are their friendships.
“I am looking forward to growing my friendship with all the girls and seeing how far we can go this season,” said Burkett.
Coach and team members emphasize the importance of unity and perseverance.
“Our strength is in our unity,” said Perkins.
Their dedication and spirit prepare them to face the season’s challenges head-on.
“We love cheering each other on and watching one another succeed,” said Burkett.
They are also eager to compete in all-around (each gymnast performs on all four apparatus) events, as they competed in their first at-home meet on Dec. 16. The next home meets take place on Jan. 14 and Jan. 20th, which is their senior night. They keep high hopes of winning regionals and, ultimately, state titles.
