After overcoming persistent scheduling challenges, the Writing Center is continuing its growth into 2024, committed to reaching as many new students as possible. This includes future Wildcats currently enrolled at nearby elementary schools.
“Recently, we worked with Nuckols Farm Elementary students who are in the Gifted Program,” senior and Writing Center consultant Simran Chavan said.
Chavan has been acting as a “faculty liaison,” communicating with local schools to establish online writing workshops for fifth graders. The consultants’ goal with these workshops is to engage with students, provide useful tips, and offer support for school assignments and application essays.
“Even though it’s a lower level, the skills are transferable, so they can still use them in middle school and high school,” Chavan said.
While the younger students received a lot of valuable writing feedback, the workshops proved to be a learning experience for the Writing Center staff as well. They presented an opportunity to go “back to the basics” and were a significant deviation from the level of writing complexity the consultants were used to.
“I feel like I learned a lot about my writing style,” junior and Writing Center Consultant Julia Towey said. “I’m able to learn new things about how to make my writing better myself. I’m not just helping them; they’re also helping me.”
The Center has additionally begun holding similar workshops for our older crowd to help with college essays, something that hasn’t been offered in previous years. These are open to all Deep Run seniors, including members of the Center staff.
“I sometimes come here to get consultations on my college essay as well,” senior and Writing Center consultant Jun Chen said. “I get to see what other people are doing for their college essays and also how I could improve in some of my writing.”
As college application season comes to a close, the Writing Center will continue community outreach outside of Deep Run. However, consultants are still providing the same services offered in previous school years. To book an appointment, visit the official Writing Center website.
