After moving to our district in August, junior Chris Suber joined our boys varsity basketball program for pre-season conditioning with the hopes of being a leader on his new team. Suber has been on the court since 2013. He has played varsity basketball since entering high school, playing his first two years at Godwin High School.
“I’ve played basketball for ten years; it’s sort of the only thing that’s always been something I can turn to,” Suber said. “I was on varsity as a freshman at Godwin. […] The coaches there taught me that even as a freshman you can be a leader, but a leader isn’t always on the court, you can lead by example. I think I can show my new teammates here at Deep Run.”
Suber is looking forward to a new coaching staff and the opportunities that can come of it. He is specifically eager to be coached by a former collegiate-level point guard who also has experience with coaching at the college level.
“Out of the coaches, I think I’m closest with [new head coach Doug] Bibby. He and I built a connection quickly when I came,” Suber said. “I feel challenged being coached by a coach of his magnitude. I believe being coached by him helps me in a lot of ways […] He pushes me every single day to not only be a great player, but a great person. He teaches me how to compete the right way and how to find comfort in uncertainty.”
With these new additions to the roster and coaching staff, the boy’s basketball team aims for a state championship this year.
“With a family-like unification of our athletes and coaches and a lot of hard work and discipline, we will be first in the state. Those planning to try out have been working for it since June,” computer science teacher and assistant coach Michael Norman said.
Head coach Doug Bibby has many coaching strategies that Suber believes have already improved his craft to play at that level.
“Bibby has taught me how to believe in my hard work. He’s a firm believer that confidence on the court comes from knowing your job, doing your job, and constantly working to be better at your job,” Suber said.
Many students are excited to fill the stands this basketball season, as rumors flew that new additions will change our basketball program for good.
