Senior tennis player Jocelynn Ginsberg has officially chosen to continue her tennis career at Towson University in Maryland. Towson University is a Division 1 school located eight miles outside of Baltimore. Ginsberg fell in love with the school after visits and interactions with the team.
“I never would have thought that I would have been a D1 tennis player; I always thought that I was gonna do D2 or D3,” Ginsberg said.
Tennis has been a major part of Ginsberg’s life for nine years. As a kid she continuously trained which helped her get where she is now in her tennis career.
“When I was younger I went to a lot of clinics that were just held by my local club at Westwood,” Ginsberg said.
During the pandemic, it was hard for many people to continue playing or training for team sports. However, Ginsberg used this time to excel in her training since tennis is a sport with limited contact. This was the beginning of her growth toward a D1-level player. After the pandemic, she continued to practice whenever she could.
“I just hit every day after school; I’ve been doing that since Covid. I think splitting it up between private lessons and clinics with other people helps because you are able to get one-on-one attention,” Ginsberg said.
Although she started her commitment process later compared to other athletes, she made sure to let schools know who she was.
“I just put myself out there, like I didn’t wait for any coaches to email me. I went and emailed like 50 schools saying I was interested in them,” Ginsberg said.
Ginsberg had three official offers from other colleges and universities but set her sights on Towson. She reached out to the coach and took a trip to the school to see if the fit was right. While on the campus visit, she fell in love with the school’s layout and location in a big city.
“I went to Towson, and I stayed in an apartment with two other girls from the team. I hung out with them, and they were having a match that day so I watched how they played,” Ginsberg said.
Ginsberg also got an opportunity to observe the team’s dynamic. Not only did she get to interact with the players, but she got to see how they interacted with each other. She liked their team bonding and how they acted as a whole around her.
“They were very out there with how they presented themselves; they were super caring towards one another and super supportive,” Ginsberg said.
Ginsberg plans to finish up her high school career on the Deep Run girls tennis team in the spring. She is currently ranked 18th in Virginia.
