Chemistry teacher Amy Earle has been named as Deep Run’s 2024 Teacher of the Year.
Earle has been a teacher at Deep Run for 21 years, starting back in 2002 when the school first opened. In 2002, Deep Run only had underclassmen students, so Earle started out by teaching Chemistry part-time at both Godwin and Deep Run.
Earle knew from a young age that she wanted to be a teacher, but not specifically science.
“I was actually really bad at chemistry in high school, it didn’t really click until college that I wanted to become a chemistry teacher,” Earle said.
Even though she was not the best at the subject, she still continued to take classes around it because it was something she enjoyed. She worked hard to get to where she is and has been a big part of the Deep Run community.
The process of choosing Teacher of the Year gives all teachers at the school an opportunity to nominate their colleagues for Teacher of the Year by writing in with descriptions of their observations about the nominated teacher.
“I was very surprised, and it was a humbling and honorable experience,” Earle said.
A big part of teaching is the students, and they are a priority for Earle.
“I was never a huge fan of science, but Ms. Earle makes it interesting and motivates me to learn,” sophomore Rania Khan said.
Earle’s students agree with the award for their teacher. Students don’t dread going to her class, but instead are excited to go to Chemistry.
“She is a good teacher because she wants the best for her students and helps them to reach their goals,” sophomore Anisha Nawar said.
