As students pick their classes for the 2024-2025 school year, a new English Dual Enrollment option is being offered to rising seniors. JSRCC College Composition 111 and 112 is a writing-based course that is offered through Reynolds Community College, but will be taken in-person at Deep Run. Students who decide to take this class will have to take Composition 111 in the first semester and Composition 112 in the second semester in order to complete the course.
Dual Enrollment classes are weighed the same as AP classes, so this class will involve a college workload.
“Students should treat this class like any other college rigor AP course that we offer. Dual Enrollment is the same when it comes to AP in terms of preparation and study. The difference between the two courses is that Dual Enrollment allows students to automatically earn college credit as long as you have an appropriate grade that allows you to go on to the next section of the course,” counselor Gregory James said.
Compared to other English courses offered, this Dual Enrollment course requires an extensive amount of writing.
“Students will write five long essays each semester with the final essay being counted as their exam, and it will be research-based,” English teacher Melissa Cho said. “We will also do some informal writing like discussion boards and reflection writing.”
Some essays written in Dual Enrollment may be similar to the essays written in AP English Language and Composition, but the two classes are not the exact same.
“It will be a good continuation of some of the writing skills students learned in AP English Language and Composition, but it will also be different because they will be bringing in other essays that we didn’t write in 11th grade English. I think that will be cool for students to expand on their writing,” English teacher Sarah Oliver said.
On Jan. 10 a mandatory meeting was held in the auditorium for interested students that went over basic requirements for the Dual Enrollment class. Information about how the course compares to AP English Literature and Composition was also presented, as they are the two college-level classes offered to 12th graders.
“For AP Literature, students really need to enjoy reading. They will analyze fiction and poetry, so it’s being able to study that literature closely and analyze it for a deeper meaning. I think that’s going to be the biggest difference between the two courses. Both courses will incorporate both reading and writing,” Oliver said.
