Phone cases, which started out as a way to protect one’s device from becoming scratched or damaged, have transformed into an expression of their owner’s style and identity. Whether it be through the actual cover or the things decorating it, a phone case can give others a small look into what type of things a person enjoys.
“My phone case is a fluffy purple bunny, [and] I got it from Shein near the end of 2021. I wanted to get it because I can put earrings on the ears, and I think it reflects my style since I can really accessorize the case however I want, so it becomes somewhat unique,” senior Yumna Al-Awadi said.
Although they started out with very simple models, covers now come in a wide variety of elaborate designs and details, and are currently a popular accessory that draws the attention and interest of people of all ages.
“I think my phone case now reflects a more clean and simplistic style, but my phone cases before were a bit sillier and bulkier […] I got a lot of compliments from people who liked looking at my phone cases, and they thought they were really silly,” junior Besma Grace said.
There are many different ways to customize your phone and change its appearance to suit your own personality. Some people attach charms to the case, while others put stickers or other various mementos inside their cover. Some examples of these tokens are photocards or gum wrapper hearts.
“My phone case is a clear, puffy case with white Hawaiian flowers and a white border. I added two phone charms to my case, one of a dog and another one with an assortment of beads. … I’ve also previously had a bear phone case, a butterfly case, a pink heart case, a flower case, and a rhinestone phone case,” Grace said.
Self expression comes in many different forms, and with technology becoming more and more prevalent, we’ve begun to express ourselves through our phone cases. This shows how humans strive to convey their emotions through nonverbal methods.
