For decades, Girl Scout cookies have been a top seller.. From the classic Thin Mints to the iconic Samoas, the Girl Scouts sell cookies to collect money to support a noble cause which helps the community in many ways. However, in recent years, the customer satisfaction has gone down, and Girl Scout cookies are losing their appeal. Not only have the prices gone way up, but the cookies just don’t taste the same as before.
The Scouts each year donate all of the money they received from the cookies to troops and councils to donate. “Troops may use the money earned to fund a project that will improve their community or donate the money to a worthy cause,” Girl Scouts official website said. Other years, it goes to “impactful girl-led community projects.”
These projects can be outdoor experiences for Girl Scouts or donated to women in STEM. Their overall goal is to “enhance all girls in the group’s Girl Scout experience.”
Of course, inflation will always play a role in goods, but when Girl Scout cookies first came out with thin mints, they charged only a few cents for boxes according to Yahoo Finance. As time went on and inflation went up, they slowly started charging dollars. In 2010, they charged $4 for a box, however; in 2023, they were selling for $6.
Also, since these cookies were a hit, the Girl Scouts brought up the price not only due to inflation, but I’m assuming that there are other economic reasons for their price rising such as supply and demand.
The quality of Girl Scout cookies has disappointed and is declining. The cookies had a blissful taste that it no longer carries. The recipe has changed.
There have been modifications for health benefits and common allergies. “In 2021, all Girl Scout Cookies are both kosher and Halal certified. There are vegan and gluten-free varieties too.” Girl Scout Cookie History official website said.
The nutrition label shows the decrease in sugar intake from the thin mints. These tweaks have changed the original flavors and textures in my opinion. There’s a slight difference in wanting more due to the high sugar intake then vs. now.
While Girl Scout cookies continue to be a hit and support a worthy cause, the recent increase in prices and declining quality has left a feeling of disappointment.
