The internet has been taken by storm over Siwa’s new song, “Karma,” released on April 5. She has been releasing snippets of the song on TikTok for weeks before the release date, causing viewers to make quick judgments.
Many people feel that Siwa’s rebrand is unusual, given how a lyric in her song says, “I was a bad girl,” which contradicts her childhood, as she wore bows and colorful clothes until her late teenage years.
Since “Karma” was released, people on the internet have been relentless with jokes and memes they have made about the song and its music video. In the video, Siwa is in water, with only the top half of her face being shown, causing many people to compare her to different characters, such as Pennywise and Moto Moto, from the movie “Madagascar.”
Despite the hate that Siwa has continuously received, she has repeatedly stated that she doesn’t let the hate bother her and that it allows her to gain popularity. During her rebrand, Siwa claimed how she was prepared to be criticized for everything she does.
Prior to the release of her song, Siwa began posting content warnings on her Instagram and TikTok accounts. People speculated what she would do that required multiple warnings. Siwa explained how she had never seen anyone give caution about the content they were releasing, so she felt that it was important to do so.
Along with her new song, Siwa changed her appearance to be more cohesive with her new brand. In 2022, she cut her hair short and dyed the underside brown, a stark contrast to her blonde hair. She also started leaning into a different clothing style. In place of the sparkles and bright colors, she now sports dark colors, studs, and jewels.
Even with the criticism “Karma” has received, many people have admitted to it being stuck in their heads because of how catchy it is. Siwa doesn’t seem to mind the hate, noting how it is still causing her to be at the forefront of news articles.
Although many people say that Siwa’s new song is bad, she just recently posted a snippet of a new song, which many were surprised about. The comments on the post reacted to the new song more positively, saying they hope she releases the new song soon.
