The Senior Awards Ceremony on May 5 saw Deep Run’s seniors enter the auditorium after a memorable walk past their friends and teachers throughout the building who were lined up in the hallways to congratulate seniors on their last few days of high school.
Senior class president Brady Kimball gave an opening speech before handing over the microphone to the Deep Run principal, Dr. Brian Fellows, who commended seniors for all that they had accomplished throughout the 2023-2024 school year and the past four years. Attendees of the ceremony described it as “bittersweet.”
“It was definitely kind of bittersweet; I think I’m ready to go, but it was nice to have some last moments with people that have meant a lot to me,” senior Zoe Butler said.
The award ceremony is one of the last moments before the Wildcat graduation and had students reflecting on their journey as well as looking forward to their new chapters ahead.
“It feels good. I know some people say it’s sad, but it’s a stepping stone onto better things […], like it’s the last thing, but it means you’re moving on to bigger things,” senior Ross Nonfodjie said.
Both Butler and Nonfodjie received accolades during the ceremony.
“I really enjoyed how everyone was so happy for every person that was selectected […]; it speaks to how much of a community that there is at Deep Run,” Butler said.
Various members of the 2024 class were recognized for their hard work and efforts in various categories, such as those who attained scholarships through academic and athletic means, those enlisting in the military, those with the highest SAT scores, those who achieved straight As for all four years, and those who would be pursuing sports with their committed schools.
The award ceremony also included the unveiling of the school’s valedictorian, Anooshka Pendyal, and salutatorian, Srikar Karra.
