The girls’ softball team has had a successful season this year. They have earned some big wins against their rivals and kept a winning streak with few losses.
“I would say it has been a pretty good season, we have a winning record and we have only lost to very competitive teams,” senior Alana Collier said.
There have been major changes in the team since last year to which they have had to learn to adapt. With a brand new coaching staff and the loss of many seniors, the team had to learn to reconnect.
“Last year was very different because we had a whole new coaching staff and we lost a lot of seniors the previous year so it was pretty much like a whole brand new team,” senior Charlotte Boswell said.
The team has been able to beat some big competition this year compared to their games against such teams last year.
“Our first game of the season we played Atlee and they are a very good team. We lost to them last year. We didn’t know how it was going to go, but we played extremely well, and we ended up winning against them,” senior Jessica Kolkhorts said.
The new coaching staff focuses on the characteristics of their competitors when preparing for games.
“We have a scoring report. Our coaches will come in and tell us what the pitcher we are gonna face is throwing, their big hitters, and where they normally hit it,” senior Alana Collier said.
The team was able to gain confidence around this season’s success, especially with their team dynamic growing close together.
“I think just us believing in ourselves and really understanding that we are good and not just like hearing it but physically seeing it with each other when we are playing [has helped us improve],” Kolkhorts said.
With lots of new and old faces alike, the team had to learn to mesh together.
“Our team chemistry is the best that it’s been out of any of the four years I’ve played, and I think that really shows on the field because we are having a really good season this year,” Boswell said.
With the season coming to an end the team has had their ups and downs with wins and losses. Through it all they have been able to create a new bond with one another.
“This season has really taught us as a team and me in general just how strong we can be and how we can really push and we have fight and grit,” Kolkhurts said.
The Lady Wildcats finished the regular season with an overall record of 14-6, and earned second place in the region with a 10-2 record. They will host Thomas Dale in the first round of Regionals on May 22 at 6:00 p.m.
