The fall of Blake Lively is certainly an unexpected result of the promotion for Lively’s new movie, “It Ends With Us.” The movie is based off of the best-selling book “It Ends With Us” by American author, Colleen Hoover. The story follows Lively’s Lily Bloom, a young woman who moves to Boston to achieve her dream of opening her own business. This is where she meets Ryle Kincaid (played by Justin Baldoni), a charming neurosurgeon, and the two fall in love. However, when Atlas Corrigan (played by Brandon Sklenar), Lily’s childhood love, re-enters her life, Lily and Ryle’s relationship is put under strain.
The movie is emotional with beautiful cinematography and vibrant colors. However, the movie missed the mark plot-wise. There were many important scenes from the book that truly built the story and introduced the plot of domestic violence. Specifically the cycle of abuse in families experiencing domestic violence. If you haven’t already read the book yourself, then it is tough to follow the movie and completely understand what is going on.
Since the book and movie both cover the serious topic of domestic violence and abuse, many of the interviews with the film’s co-stars ask questions about the abuse portrayed in the film. Jake Hamilton, a journalist for Fox 32 Chicago News, asked Lively about how she would handle a domestic violence survivor coming up to her to talk about the movie. Lively responded with a sarcastic comment that made some fans feel as though her answer was tone deaf and inappropriate. “Like, asking for my address or my phone number or my location share,” Lively said.
Along with this, an old 2016 interview with the actress has recently resurfaced adding to the negative attention Lively is receiving. In an interview with Norwegian reporter, Kjersti Flaa, the journalist congratulates Lively on her “little bump” (Lively was open about her pregnancy at the time). However, Lively responds with a snarky comment, “Congrats on your little bump.” The interview continues on, but the vibe is uncomfortable and tense. Throughout the interview Lively continues to ignore the journalist and have side conversations with her co-star, Parker Posey. Flaa has recently explained that she was struggling through an infertility diagnosis at the time, which has further intensified the backlash against Lively.
Some fans are calling Lively a mean girl, saying her behavior was rude and unnecessary. The bad light that Lively is in is not doing any good for the promotion of “It Ends With Us.” Perhaps Lively will turn out to be one of the many celebrities who is ridiculed by cancel culture for a few weeks and then forgotten about. But for now, the internet has decided that Lively is canceled.
