A new club at Deep Run is making it easier than ever for students to get involved in their community. Founded this school year, Helping Hands is a student-led community service club focused on spreading kindness through small acts and larger service projects.
“I’ve always been looking to gain more volunteer opportunities, and my dream club would be one that provides a lot of volunteer opportunities,” said junior Alexa Coates, founder and club president.
Coates’s idea quickly took effect after she came across the Helping Hands Organization on social media and decided to bring a version of it to school. With the help of her best friend and club communications director, junior Ella Walter, the club soon became a reality.
Helping Hands provides hands-on activities to make volunteering both accessible and enjoyable for everyone involved. Some of these opportunities include writing letters for the elderly, making cards for veterans, and tutoring.
“We provide a large scale of opportunities ranging from tutoring to answering trivia questions,” Coates said.
Walter hopes the club will not only help students build their résumés but also inspire them to develop meaningful life skills under the lines of leadership.
“We hope to provide students with opportunities to help them grow and develop certain skills for their future,” Walter said.
As the club grows, vice president and junior Rosie Colvin wants to make an equal impact on the club.
“I want to be able to have a club where you can directly access volunteer opportunities and it also looks good for college,” Colvin said.
Along with Colvin wanting to make an impact on the student community, Coates also wants to further that by getting more students involved in club activities.
“Some goals I have for the club is to have a lot of different people in the club that way we have a lot of different people doing different things, especially things that they want to do,” Coates said.
Helping Hands is open to all students interested in getting involved, meeting new people, and giving back. Helping Hands will be holding their first meeting soon and you can find out more about them on their Instagram, @helpinghandsdrhs.
