The reveal of the 2025 Word of the Year has certainly been a surprise, as Dictionary.com ironically announced that they had chosen 67 (pronounced six-seven) as the Word of the Year due to the extensive rise of online searches regarding the meaning of 6-7. The word of the year is meant to represent the social culture, and it seems as though 6-7 has been deemed a good reflection of 2025.
Since 2020, TikTok has become a popular social media platform for teenagers all across the globe. With this, brainrot culture has been on the rise, starting with memes regarding ‘rizz’ and ‘megamind’ to ‘mewing’ and ‘6-7.’
The 6-7 meme has gained popularity, with students breaking out in a chorus of laughter from simply hearing the two numbers.
“Any time anything 6-7 related is even mentioned in class, I can definitely notice everyone trying to hold back their laughter,” senior Rania Khan said.
The joke initially originated from the song “Doot Doot (6 7)” by Skrilla, which was often used as a background song in basketball edits on TikTok. Due to its catchy tune, the song quickly took over the “For You Page” (FYP) and became the newest meme to overtake the internet.
“Honestly, I don’t really know what 6-7 even means. I just know it has something to do with brainrot,” Khan said.
This is something that is true for a lot of teenagers, with many of them not really knowing the true meaning being the common phrase. However, Dictionary.com believes that 6-7 may merely just be a joke meant to confuse teachers and parents.
“I think there’s a lot of fun to be had with it. To me it’s sort of an innocent and fun terminology that’s become popular with students. It’s been interesting to see people get on the bandwagon with it […] and to notice patterns in the way the number 6-7 shows up in other situations in life,” English Teacher Melissa Cho said.
Despite 6-7 being rooted in meme culture, it is clear that it has been significant enough to make an impact in 2025 and represent the social trends of the year.
