The student-founded organization Sugar and Shelter continues to grow and help local animal shelters by donating half the profits they raise through baked goods.
Junior Triveda Dasari, founder of Sugar and Shelter, originally started baking four years ago. Her love for baking continued to grow over the years.
“I started Sugar and Shelter because I love to bake in general for my family and friends, so I thought, why not put this skill towards a good cause?” Dasari said.
Everything started from a simple idea, which branched out into something bigger.
“First, I started with an Instagram account. […] I followed a lot of mutual friends and family. After that, I created a website to make ordering easier rather than taking requests through DM’s. From there, we started doing bake sales,” Dasari said.
The group of friends, now members of the organization, discuss with each other as to what their next move should be. The group tries to stay organized and on top of everything.
“We’ve made a calendar for when we have our bake sales, which makes it easier for everyone to be on the same track for when something is happening,” junior Winnie Zhao said.
The group continues to add new baked goods and even dog and cat treats to their products.
“We had a stand near the entrance to the dog park. We would sell dog treats and dog muffins and also human desserts such as mini apple pies, red velvet bundt cake, Oreo cupcakes, and cookies,” junior Ceci Chen said.
More recently, Dasari has been focusing on promoting the organization.
“As of now, I really want to reach a wider audience on social media, maybe get catering orders for other schools or events, and this could be done through commercials and even reaching out to local shelters themselves,” Dasari said.
