After some citizens felt alarmed by a number of the Trump administration’s new policies, many people across America peacefully protested as part of the No Kings movement on Oct. 18. Approximately seven million people are said to have participated nationwide, including Richmond, Va., which saw thousands of protesters, with some estimates numbered around 20,000 people.
Protesters walked from the State Capitol building to Monroe Park while holding up signs that underlined the same theme: “No kings.”
“We’re standing up against tyranny and standing for justice and making sure that Donald Trump does not take this country away because the Constitution says we all have the freedom of speech,” William Mcgee said, a protester who attended Richmond’s No King’s protest.
The policies that the Trump Administration is trying to and has enforced, some of which have been challenged as unconstitutional, include the immigration laws that have sparked many controversies and new regulations that limits the news media.
In addition, the funding for American healthcare has been cut, and many of the current Environmental Protection Agency regulations have been put at risk under the Trump Administration.
Many lives have been affected by the Trump Administration’s agenda, which most recently resulted in the Government shutdown that holds the record for the longest time, 43 consecutive days.
The official No Kings organization, an organization made to spread awareness on how American citizens can tackle these policy changes, states, “The Republican government shutdown has decimated funding for SNAP, leaving 42 million Americans without access to their full food stamp benefits. President Trump and Republicans could end the shutdown immediately, but they refuse to negotiate with Democrats on a funding bill that protects healthcare and keeps it affordable.”
In recent news, President Trump has signed a temporary government funding bill. The bill ensures protection against further termination of federal workers until the end of January, when Congress will debate a budget bill again, and guarantees that all federal workers will be paid once the shutdown is over.
Going forward, communities are still protesting. The No King’s organization is still planning future protests.
