After fans have waited five years for new music to be announced, genre-defying band The Neighbourhood has finally released their long-awaited fifth studio album “(((((ultraSOUND))))).” The album was released on Nov. 14, with 15 tracks; however, the band had already released three singles: “Private,” “OMG,” and “Lovebomb” on Friday, Oct. 24, along with the album announcement.
According to UPROXX, “A press release describes the album as a ‘powerful return to the band’s roots’ that blends ‘the raw energy of ’90s alt-rock with a modern […] edge,’ saying it draws inspiration from ‘Brit-pop while maintaining their signature California indie sound.’” While the indie sound is very much present, the return to 90s alt-rock roots seems to be missing.
The album doesn’t stand out and fails to capture the listener’s attention, but that’s sort of why it works too. “(((((ultraSOUND)))))” is the perfect slow album to listen to on repeat during the fall months — as background music. With a melancholy, slow vibe and sound, fans can expect something calmer compared to their earlier albums, with critics saying how the album has been “redesigned.”
Songs like “OMG,” “Hula Girl,” “Private,” and “Planet” seem to be the saving grace for the album. Listeners have been saying online that these are the best songs and are more like their old music in terms of sound and lyrics. According to Paste Magazine, “The band’s main strength has always been their hooks. Sure, they’re keen to sell an image that’s ‘alternative’ […] But when all is said and done, the band thrives on memorable pop melodies.”
But after a couple of the tracks on the album, they all start to blend into each other. While it might be good listening while you do your math homework, I can’t see fans getting excited to see this album performed live when they take it on tour in 2026.
