Letterboxd is a social platform for film lovers to track, review, rate, and discover movies, functioning like a “Goodreads” for movies, where users log films they’ve seen, create watchlists, and write reviews that stem from either being a short joke or a long essay.
In this platform, when you make an account, you can add your top four movies. In the spirit of Letterboxd, we decided to ask staff at Deep Run to share their top four movies of all time and why.
English teacher Julia Skinner starts strong with “Top Gun” (1986), starring Tom Cruise as the lead. Top Gun is a movie based on the Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School, where the best of the best train to refine their elite flying skills. This movie has an average rating on Letterboxd of 3.5/5 stars, while Skinner’s rating is a 4.5/5.
The second movie she chose was “Top Gun: Maverick” (2022) unsurprisingly.
“I like action movies with handsome leading men,” Skinner said.
Social Studies teacher Curt Fritts has plenty of movies he enjoys, but his number one choice is is “There Will Be Blood” (2007).
“Daniel Day-Lewis gives a masterful performance as a ruthless oil man who battles with his local church,” Fritts said.
On Letterboxd, “There Will Be Blood” has a high rating of 4.5/5 stars, which is very high for Letterboxd, considering almost all overall ratings are below four.
Physics teacher Matthew Wilson includes a sci-fi pick in his top four with “Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan” (1982), which he described as one of the strongest entries in the Star Trek franchise.
For his number one spot, he chose “Princess Bride” (1987), a film he praised for having something for everyone. Wilson described it as a perfect movie for family, friends, or even date nights.
“It’s got adventure, pirates, sword fights, romance, it’s got it all,” Wilson said.
Together, the teachers’ selections show just how different and personal movie tastes can be. Whether it’s a classic adventure or a critically acclaimed drama, the teachers of Deep Run prove that there’s no “correct” top four.
